Name of the lifeline hanking coil/knot

What is the name of the coil/knot which stores a line such as the roller furler line on the lifeline, ready for quick use, started being used by the racing community?

Re: Name of the lifeline hanking coil/knot

I found one reference that calls it a 'lifeline coil'.

Re: Name of the lifeline hanking coil/knot

Lifeline coil is what I always use. I do the "hand over hand" way of coiling the rope, or I guess here it is called the "butterfly coil" https://vimeo.com/85435983

Much better, doesn't introduce twists in the line. Some line is more annoying to have twists in it than other line (long lines are bad, obviously halyards are really annoying to get twists in them).

There are quite a few ways of securing a coil. Can you post pictures of the one you are asking about?

Probably the most common name is a cow hitch. Basically wrap the coil around the lifeline or rail and pull the end of the coil through the bight.

Re: Name of the lifeline hanking coil/knot

Is not the "lifeline coil" just a girth hitch (aka strap hitch, bale sling hitch, etc)? ABOK #1694.

Or you could call it a cow hitch, larksfoot hitch, baggage tag etc.

Really need a pic:

Too many possibilities: cow hitch, clove hitch, slipping clove hitch, rolling hitch with a slip, and so on.

Look at this pic. It's traditionally called a "lamb's ear" for obvious reasons. Pic needs rotating 90º clockwise :-)

Re: Name of the lifeline hanking coil/knot

I've always heard that called a "larks head" or a "cow hitch", though I think name applies first and foremost when used with a single line (vs. a coil). Using that technique / knot on an entire coil is just a special use of the knot.
