Re: Poor boom end fittings

In decreasing order of complexity and cost and effectiveness.

As a previous poster mentioned, the best solution is to remove the entire end fitting and replacing it with one that has sheaves. It would even be worth cutting off the end of the boom and fitting a proper end fitting (of course, do this only if the boom section does have a sheave box option (likely) and the boom end itself is structurally sound and can handle a different boom end). This looks like a really awful cheap option by the manufacturer, shame on them.

The simplest solution, but makeshift, is to glue PTFE strips onto the bearing surfaces. That will be a wear item that will need replacing every so often.

A better solution and the only thing left if the boom end cannot be modified is to go to a low stretch and smaller diameter line (Dyneema/UHMWPE core double braid line with Dyneema/UHMWPE cover (preferred) or Polyester cover (adequate) - that will be much more slippery. Even if you don’t go so high tech with the line, go smaller diameter as the line you’ve got looks a bit big and is likely jamming up. Make sure the working load of the new line at least matches the old line.

Re: Poor boom end fittings

The LF 220 number refers to the Sparcraft 220 boom extrusion.
The old school end fitting can be obtained from this supplier and many more

Simple exercise of drilling out a couple of pop rivets and replacing the boom end fitting
with the vastly better old school one.

Re: Poor boom end fittings

inspecter: Thanks, I found the parts number for normal boom ends. Below is a picture showing the line binding in the current boom end as the line is too thick for the fitting. The dealer is waiting on a repsonse from Beneteau.
