Profurl foil issue

Otherwise known as my Viagra problem. Got her up, can't get it down.

We left the boat on the hard in NC for about 4 months while we delivered our small boat to Newfoundland. When we came back and launched I found some odd issues.
The tri color was smashed, top half missing.
The VHF, mounted to the side of the mast, was pulled apart with the mount seriously bent.
Curiously the wind instruments were OK
The Genoa went up OK but got stuck.

No clue what all happened and I don't want to accuse the yard with no evidence they did something. We had been hard aground and been tilted off just before being hauled. While I think it highly unlikely the event happened then I suppose it's within the realm of possibility. But there must have been a rain of broken stuff coming down which neither of us saw or felt. And we were both on the deck at that time.

About the Profurl foil. Here is what happened when I climbed the mast with the sail down (after repeated attempts one time it just came down fine, go figure!)

As the swivel approached the joint about 3' from the top it would get stuck. If I forced it over the joint it would get stuck on the way down, above the joint. Close observation showed signs it was binding in the area around the joint. One of the set screws was backed out a wee bit. I tug tends that (locktite!) with no change. It was as if the foil was ovaled either side of the joint, imperseptabley. The joint seemed as tight as other joints. There were no signs of abuse, being hit, dented, scratched or anything.

I ended up filing down the bit between the two groves a small amount and that seems to have resolved the issue. And I mean a small amount. The swivel now goes up and down AOK.

With all the repairs I ended up doing roughly two 2 hour stints atop the mast today. Tired pup here. Just passing on my experience.

hpeer,

Possibility the damage to stuff aloft was caused by Hurricane Matthew.

Damn, I see Apple has again fixed my spelling in the thread title. Oh well.

That's as good a guess as any I suppose. But we are quite a way up the Neuse, 30 or 40 miles from the ocean, I don't think they had a heck of a lot of wind here. I sure don't see any signs of it. Some localized severe flooding from heavy rainfall.

hpeeer,

Report this post to the mods using the red outlined triangle in the lower left, and ask them to fix to "Profurl" from "Procure", I'm sure they'e be glad to help. Or you can report one of your own. They are more likely to notice the request when you do it as a separate report.

Good luck with the re-furb, sorry about the foil.

Ann

Re: Profurl foil issue

Things could have gotten dinged in any number of ways. Though hopefully it's sorted now. But it wouldn't hurt to pull of the stay along with the foil before next season, & go over it in detail, on the ground, so that things are easier to fully inspect. Just a "think" anyway.
