I learned the one-handed bowline method in the Boy Scouts. I've never found a need to tie it other than when demonstrating knots and knot tricks to my captive crew. I usually finish by making a Mobius Strip and having a crewmember slice it lengthwise with some scissors, and then slice it again. Nobody ever expects the result.

This is the position the tail adopts when a bowline is tightened. It passes through the loop from the side it is classically tied on and then it sticks out at quite an angle relative to the loop. From this position an Oysterman’s stopper naturally forms:
