What Thinwater says - use a proper halyard deflector. The saddle solution introduces chafe and serious stress on the screws/rivets holding the saddle to the mast.

Your roller furling stiffness was caused by the halyard wrapping. That’s a relatively easy fix.

Another reason that roller furling can be stiff, if you have a turnbuckle at the bottom of your forestay, is the foil sliding down and catching on the turnbuckle. In our case the turnbuckle was being slowly opened. So do check that the foil is in position and hasn’t slid down.
