Rope Lubricant

I heard that ropes (PE, nylon, etc.) are lubricated by the manufacturer.

I want to wash my ropes and renew the lubricant, but the wrong lubricant might damage the rope.

Does anyone know what lubricant is used?

A wash-in water repellent treatment, like Nikwax, does a good job of refreshing internal lubrication. They are used on climbing ropes, so they are safe.


You do NOT need to do the full instructions for rope. Prewash and dry completely. Soak in a bucket for the required time, and they air dry. Use the dregs for the next rope.


I have done this dozens of times.

Do it like climbers! That’s the right tip. There are tons of youtube videos on how to clean climbing rope and special cleaning products are there as well.
