Sail out of groove in mast furling

Hi all.
2018 Jeanneau 419.
I had to take down the sail and now I can’t hoist it back because I can’t put the leech back into the groove or track inside the mast….

There should be a wide spot in the groove (a "gate") in the mandrel for that. Usually not right at the bottom, look up a foot or two.

Why won't it go in? There is a dry lubricant available from chandlers which can help. Harken is one make with a price to match

Re: Sail out of groove in mast furling

This is a two person operation. One to guide the sail into the groove and another to man the winch. Go slow as it can become jammed and needs to be backed down. I find that once the first 3-4 feet are feeding well the rest feeds much easier. There should be a similar grove at the bottom for the clue to slide into with a shackle at the bottom.

Personal lesson learned; ensure the drum with your furler's inhaul is positioned appropriately. If you raise the sail with insufficient line in the drum you will have to lower the sail and spin the drum by hand to get enough line on the drum.

Good luck.

Or sometimes it is down LOWER than you expect, and you need to take the tack of the sail off the get things to fit in the bottom of the groove. That is what I think I see in your photos...

And you can do it solo - I have a few times.
Just go slow, hoisting a few feet at a time and moving the sail and folds around so the luff rope lines up nicely.

And you can get your "10,000 steps" of exercise running back and forth if the halyard line is led to the cockpit.

Re: Sail out of groove in mast furling

Looks like you are already got it done.

Meanwhile, next time the sail is off. That is when you want to be sure and do some maintenance on the furler tube. Cleaning and greasing top and bottom, and adjusting the tension for the tube itself. That is separate from the halyard tension.
