Sail pack chafe question

Hi All,
I am thinking about making a sail pack for our 37 Issues. We have lazy jacks (Shaeffer) on our boat now. We have issues with the lazy jacks chaffing the main unless we pull them all the way forward. This may be a silly question but does anyone have that problem with the sail packs? How do you avoid it?

Re: Sail pack chaff question

When underway I ease the lazy jack lines about 20cm so there is no chafe on the sail and the sail pack falls away with the lazy jacks. When in serious passage making I use the quick connects to detach the sail pack from the mast allowing the sail pack to drop to the boom and furl the sail pack to the boom. This leaves the full sail area exposed and eliminates concern for chafe

Re: Sail pack chafe question

Could also depend what type of line is used for the lazy jacks. We sailed 10,000 ocean miles and didn't have any chafe from the lazy jacks or blocks holding up the sail bag. The lower batten and sail bag against the lower after shroud was the worst point of chafe.

Best to use very stretchy 3 strand nylon. Many thousands of miles, no chafe. Stretchy allows line to be pushed away by the sail.

Re: Sail pack chafe question

We take the opposite approach and use small diameter dyneema lines. Very slippery, so no chafe.
