side by side splice

Good day folks,

I am relatively new to splicing and have been trying to find information on a particular splice but to no avail so I was hoping that the splicing masters on here may be able to help me. I can do eye splices relatively easy and have done some three strand splicing, all with larger diameter rope but this one I would like to do is with small diameter rope and is, for lack of a better term, a side by side splice and I cannot figure it out nor can I find any info on it like I said. I have included a picture of what it looks like, so anyone that can help, I would be very appreciative of! Thank you in advance.

Re: side by side splice

Welcome to CF!

As to the splice in question, what's it's use/purpose. And in the one pictured, what is the configuration of the line(s) on the right hand edge of the image? Is it an eye splice, or something else?

For splicing instructionals, there are lots of resources on the websites of many cordage manufacturers. Ditto cordage vendors. And of course, online, or on Youtube. Plus, if you're so inclined, there are classes on splicing. Which for me, taking them was both fun, as well as learning some great skills to add to my toolbox... back in the pre-internet days. When knowledge availability was a good deal less.

Also, I'm a big fan of Brion Toss's splcing wands. They make quick work of splicing any sort of braided line. And are especially invaluable when working on lines possessing tight covers, or that aren't brand new, & thus are tougher to splice. Brion Toss Yacht Riggers, Sailboat Rigging::Splicing Gear

Re: side by side splice

Seems you would put a standard splice as close to the end as possible. Maybe 3-4'. Pull the splice together then cut of the extra few feet

Re: side by side splice

Thanks Uncivilized.

The splice is not an eye. The ends running off of the image are loose ends. They are not connected except for the splice. I have been unable to find anything that looks like this splice on any of the manufacturers sites or YouTube. Believe me I have looked, hence why I have come here for some help.

Re: side by side splice

What practical purpose would such a splice serve?

If you can't locate the splice, it is more than likely because it serves a very limited practical purpose.

Why would I need a line spliced with three ends?

The vocabulary police have to jump in. It is line, not rope. Rope is either on a spool or hanging from the clapper of a bell. Once it is off the spool it is line.

If you have a Gaff Wing Sail on a Wharram catamaran its serves as a single uphaul for the main and when the sails 2/3rds up it becomes 2 lines.. one for hauling the main the rest of the way and the other for setting the masthead Gaff..

Spin and jib sheets are the primary uses.

It is the one splice I have been unable to find instructions for, but I thinking it will be in Brian Toss' new book.

To be honest I would just join the two lines by treating it as an eye splice.. open the end of the one line and whip then slice into the other wherever you want it to join.

In your opinion.

I prefer the alternative: "once it is prepared for use in a specific manner it is a line".

I've got lots of lengths of rope on board that used to be lines.

Re: side by side splice

It looks like an eye splice so can't you do it the same way, except instead of turning the line on itself you use a second line instead?

Well this is how I use the term. Besides there are a few more "ropes" on a boat besides the bell rope. Footrope if you have a square sail and have to walk out over the yard to reef and furl. Then there's the boltrope in the luff of a genoa. There are a few more that do not come to mind at the moment, not that it really matters or that anyone really cares.

Only slicing I know is "SPLICING THE MAIN BRACE", with RUM not a rope or line!!!
