Side mounting of rope clutch

We have two rope clutches on our boat that are mounted sideways (see attached images of one of them). It very much looks like they are Lewmar DC2 clutches (they are probably from 2015). I have not been able to find an installation manual for those clutches and I am wondering if all the Lewmar clutches can be mounted sideways like that? Is a special kit needed?

What I need now is a double clutch for 8-10 mm rope that can be mounted sideways like that. The loads are not going to be very large. Does anybody know if a Lewmar DC1 clutch can be mounted sideways? Does that apply to both the single and double clutches? I can maybe use two single clutches instead of a double if necessary.

Re: Side mounting of rope clutch

I may be wrong but I think they are supposed to be mounted the other way

Looking at an exploded view there appears to be holes in the mechanism just where the fasteners are in your pic, so probably good to go.

Thanks, that sounds promising. Do you have a link for the exploded view?

I think those side screws are for ganging them together. Depending on how much force is going to be generated it might be okay anyway. I have found Lewmar tech support very helpful and recommend contacting them at techsupport@lewmar.com.

Thanks for the suggestion of contacting Lewmar tech support. I e-mailed them and got a reply this morning. It turns out that they changed the clutches since the (approx 2015) model I have. The new ones can not be side mounted.

Depending on how long you need the clutch to hold, you might consider a cheek block with a jammer. These are intended to hold a load somewhat temporarily, for example while getting a wrap off of a winch or changing sheets.

Re: Side mounting of rope clutch

Mount a bracket or wooden block on the wall under the actual jammer bottomside and mount the jammer onto it.
Problem solved and jammer mounted as it should..

Re: Side mounting of rope clutch

Spinlock makes a model that can be side mounted (with additional mounting kit), but I think it only comes in a single.

Antal also makes some that can be side mounted, not sure if double is available.

I will see if I can find a good alternative. Otherwise it will be Franziska's approach.
