Re: Silly Rigging Question

Sailorboy1, There is plenary of creaking on my boat. Also clanking, groaning and rattling. After exhaustive examination I concluded that most of it is coming from me.

Re: Silly Rigging Question

The halyards tap around in my masts, the anchor snubber creaks, my cabinet doors tap slightly. My boat makes noise, but not in ways that make me nervous.

I've chartered boats that creak like all the interior furniture is flexing and moving. That makes me nervous.

Re: Silly Rigging Question

No rigging noise here, either. Keel stepped mast.

Check your spreader tips: are they at the correct angle? Is there adequate rig tension so that the tips retain that angle (they should be perpendicular to the angle of the wire bend)? If they're creeping that could be the source of the squeak.

Another possible source of squeaking is the roller furler, securing it might change your situation. It might need more tension on the stay.

If the main sheet is not secured tightly, your boom may sway a bit in the wakes, and that makes a sort of low pitched squeak noise.

If you think the squeak is related to the rig, the ear to the screwdriver at the mast trick might confirm it for you. At any rate, when you are above decks when waked, look for motion, stop whatever's moving, and have your good lady wife below to holler when the noise stops. You'll soon learn what is causing the noise.

Unsorted, it means you have motion where it is unwelcome, and may be causing wear which will require a repair or replace sort of solution.

Re: Silly Rigging Question

Isn't this the origin of the tradition of not whistling on board? Squeaks and creaks indicate wear; Ann's right, as usual.

Pointy end toward the rigging/mast.
