solentstay sizing

what would be the correct diameter for a solentstay for a 40' 7,6t sloop? currently it is 6mm & PO says only moderate tensioning of the solentstay is possible as with too much tension the main forestay with the furled 110% jib gets too much slack & starts working in a seaway.

Re: solentstay sizing

I used 1/4"or 6mm. Do you have a furler on the Solent stay? I've was able to get a shared tension between both stays that keeps the funky motion to a min.

Re: solentstay sizing

solent is hank on, stay has a nice parking position with the curved Selden slit tube keeping it from marring the mast.in operating position it's just behind the furler.
how big isyour boat, Ecos?

Re: solentstay sizing

Our Solent stay is 7 mm Dyform wire. Seems adequate for our ~250 sq ft Solent jib.

Re: solentstay sizing

My solent stay on 39' offshore sailboat is 8mm.
Headstay, backstay and other stays that support mast are 10mm.
Boat is 9 metric tons displacement.

Re: solentstay sizing

Are you sure the issue is one of solent stay sizing? I reads that the issue maybe one that, as the solent stay is tensioned, it is taking the load off the headstay rather than the solent stay elongating. A situation akin to what occurs in double headstay situations. What is occurring to the backstay(s) as the solent is tightened? Hull?

Re: solentstay sizing

the issue is insofar one of solentstay sizing, as there is little sense in a hefty solentstay if it can't be tightened all that much anyay because of the typical "double-headstay-issue". these 6mm just seem quite thin in the stays parking position beside the 10mm Dyform of the lower verticals...

Re: solentstay sizing

tensioning btw is hydraulic on backstay & Wichard ratchet tensioner on solentstay
rig is fractional, no runners, swept back spreaders (all of which limits available headstay tension of course)
