Re: Splicing Sta Set X (questions!)

Did you try YouTube? New England rope has a great video on the double braid the guy really simplifies it and makes it understandable. They might have one for x.

Re: Splicing Sta Set X (questions!)

I will freely admit this video and I have done many, many, many splices together

https://youtu.be/UghIS9xdiDw

IMHO it is the only guidance you need to splice double braid

Re: Splicing Sta Set X (questions!)

Sorry all, I was sleeping or rather out skiing.

I've no problem with splicing double braid - Staset X is not double braid.

Why we are asked would anyone use staset X for a Genoa sheet?

Mea Culpa - I have no idea what I was thinking when I bought it 8 years ago. Total brain fart I expect.

It costs me nothing but time to give a splice a try. I expect that with the difficulty splicing it I will fail and end up buying a new set of sheets (staset likely)

There is a reference to a Brian Toss video on splicing staset X but I have not found it yet.

Here are the instructions from NE; it's easy when new; most line is damned hard to splice when used. Agree with those who wonder why you'd ever use this for sheets; great for halyards though.

I get lost with figure 6 in that set of directions. Mostly because I need to do a hands on to see it. Being a very visual person ....

At the time I bought this rope is was recommended for Genoa sheets where one wanted more control of elongation. Live and learn.

I notice that the spec sheet still recommends it for sheets.

Re: Splicing Sta Set X (questions!)

I gave up on splicing Sta Set X and just started to use a halyard hitch to a shackle in place of the splice. For a sheet, I'd just tie a bowline to the clew and call it good. I really see little benefit in fighting to splice the line to a soft shackle... it will still hang up if dragging across an inner stay either way.

No need to bang your head. WM states today:

However, 9 years ago things were different. Back then StaSet-X was listed for Genoa sheets.

I wish I knew then what I know now.

WM are confused. They say "Double Braid" in the header, but further down in the "Key features", you will see:

"Parallel polyester core with braided cover "
and then just below it:
"Construction smooth braided polyester core"

Doesn't matter what WM say in their catalog. The core of Staset X is NOT braided. A quick look at a bit of it with the cover skinned back will verify this statement.

I never liked it, even for halyards because of its propensity to stiffen markedly once exposed to stress. Nowadays the same applications are better served with spectra cored double braid: less weight, less stretch, easy to splice, nicer hand, better ultimate chafe resistance, not a huge difference in price, especially when lifetime is factored in.

I dunno what I would use that bit of line for myself!

Splicing Sta Set X (questions!)

I changed to vpc for halyards and am pretty happy so far
I looked at stayset but didn’t care for the feel or the splice
