Standing rigging cost guesstimate

Hey all,

Curious if anyone can offer ball park figures of what you've paid for new standing rigging in the last 6-12 months.

We have a bayfield 36 and want to have new standing rigging made. We are currently in Grenada and there is one option locally for wire rigging. Wondering if they are gouging us cruisers

Trying to decide if we should look elsewhere, try to import it, or proceed with the local shop...

We're being quoted: new shrouds w/ swaged ends and new turnbuckles and toggles. And labor installed.

~$7500 USD

4 lowers 7mm wire 7.75 meters each
2 intermediates 8mm wire 10.10 meters each
2 cap shrouds 8mm wire , 13.6 meter
1 backstay 8mm wire, 14.5 meter
Forestay 8mm, 14.8meter
Inner forestay 7mm 11meter
Bobstay 10mm, 2.3meter
Bow sprit sidestays 10mm, 2.4meter

Are we being gouged?

In Annapolis I paid a little more than that for my T40.

Re: Standing rigging cost guesstimate

Does that price include their labour to remove the old rigging and install all the new rigging?

For comparison I spent $4300 CAD rerigging my Morgan Out Island 41 ketch (14 stays), BUT I removed all the rigging from the masts and reinstalled it all myself. But that was 5 years ago now and COVID pricing for stuff is pretty wacky now!

That 7500 usd includes a rigger to remove the old and install the new.

I feel the inflation in the US has a ripple effect through everywhere.

I'm trying to be understanding of where we are/respectfull of our host's country but not be taken advantage of.

This is all helpful. Thank you

Seems like a good price.

Re: Standing rigging cost guesstimate

Have you thought about doing it yourself with Sta-Lok fittings?
New turnbuckles and toggles? Why? I mean it’s nice but is this an insurance item?
Bronze open body stuff seems to last a long time. There’s a lot of other rigging parts to look at. Something amiss now? Sailing to USA anytime?
It’s a nice feeling to understand you own rig fully.

What is the labour cost component of the quote? Realistically anyone can install rigging as long as you have the pieces labelled! Its just a clevis pin and a cotter pin/ring holding it all together. might be a way to reasonably reduce the total $$

Seems a reasonable price, especially since it includes remove/install. I'd only be concerned what sort of turnbuckles they're using: all stainless bottle screws? run away. Hayn open-body turnbuckles? Lots better.

Not an insurance issue. The real reason is we just don't know for sure the age of the current hardware. We know the wire is 14-15 years old. The TBs have some pitting and we'd like to know we have a fresh set of downs on everything.

We have 3 connection types at the mast; stemball, shroud terminal and 't' terminal. We did consider having swaged fittings at the mast and staylock at the deck. I'm not sure it would save us. We did toy with NOT changing the 10mm TBs on the bowsprit as they're in better shape and they're the most expensive.

Being from the USA and then sailing around the Caribbean. It gets a bit exhausting trying to keep a boat running with the stuff that's available... Everyone is keeping their boats together with 'probably good enough.'. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To import something we'd likely be looking at around 4.50 a pound in shipping. If the savings is significant we could justify it.

Measure/Remove/Install is ~1500 of the total price

Re: Standing rigging cost guesstimate

I replaced my standing rigging myself for around $1,400 on a 34' with four lowers, two cap stays, forestay and backstay. I bought custom rigging from Defender with swaged eyes on terminal tops, I installed Sta-Lok terminal pins on the bottoms.

I bought a decent ratcheting wire cutter to avoid the grinder method of cutting. My mast is keel-stepped. I climb my mast with a rope climbing rig of climbing harness, two Jumar ascenders, slings, carabiners and fish aiders.

I do most of the work on my boat myself. While there are some honest, decent marine professionals out there, most are not all that professional. Most boat work is not exactly rocket science. I can do a better job myself on many items, without begging someone to take my money, show up sober, or return my telephone calls or e-mails. I also feel a sense of satisfaction and boat-owner competency by taking on these tasks. I am not helpless and dependent on others. Finally, while underway, I have discovered I can diagnose and fix most of the problems that arise because of my knowledge of my boat and its systems.

Re: Standing rigging cost guesstimate

You can request a quote from FKG in St Martin. There are also riggers here in Trinidad that you might contact.

St Martin was known for being the cheapest in the Caribe.. dunno if that still stands but folks used to fly from other islands to buy boat gear and still make a saving on items.
