Straightening a stanchion

I'm trying to help a buddy with a bent stainless steel stanchion. It bent right at the base and the Survey said it needs to be straightened. I drilled a hole in a block of wood the same diameter as the tube and jammed it in. I used the handle from a truck jack and then heated the stainless and tried bending it back. It only worked to a point then stopped. I fear putting any more pressure on it. Is there anything else I can do? Find one at the local dump maybe??

If you’re going to try to source a used one away, keep trying.

What are you using to heat it? MAPP? Oxy/acetylene?

@floater88,

With s/s, once it moved, it work hardened. You are likely to break it now if you try to bend it more. Maybe you can use it if it's not very bent now. If it is unusable as is, you've little to keep you from trying to bend it more, as otherwise a new one will have to be found. I don't know about sourcing one at a dump shop, it could happen, but seems very unlikely to me. Usual source would be a marine chandlery.
