Switching profurl from navtec rod to wire

Replacing the standing rigging and moving from rod to wire.

Boat has a profurl on -10 rod which is 6.4mm. Replacement wire is 5/16 or 8 mm. What can of worms am I looking at? Will I need to disassemble foil? Replace bearings?

Thanks!

Re: Switching profurl from navtec rod to wire

According to a tech at wichard the profurl lc-42 can accommodate wire up to12mm. So there's nothing to change.

While I have it down what should I replace or service?

Re: Switching profurl from navtec rod to wire

I'm pretty sure you'd be aware of this, but the wire stretches more and isn't as strong as the rod, so I'd go with the larger size. Depending on the kind of bearings that are used, they may be chewed up by the rod. If you can get it, compact strand is stronger per diameter than plain 1 x 19. Our rigger told us that with wire, expect to replace forestay furler wire every 4 years, because of the stresses of using the sail partly rolled up, loading the wire differently. Having had to replace the 4.5 yr old forestay from the furler when it broke in Luganville, Vanuatu, I think it was good advice.
