Dude~ replace it! I work for a rigging company-I see little stuff like this fail every week resulting in failed rigs, broken masts etc…thankfully the end of the penny pinching sailor is coming to an end as a lot of these 70-80’s boats reach the graveyard.

Man- that is some sketchy shop…although, a lot of repair shops just do what’s listed on the work order, so, OWNERS, please be diligent!

Hard to believe we are arguing the point.

Old critical items get replaced - or not, at your peril.

We noticed a fish hook on a mizzen shroud. I arranged for a full rig inspection in Trinidad at hurricane haul out. The rigger found a similar fish hook on that shroud’ mate but high up. The 3/4” uppers on the main were dodgy And the 3/4” Backstay lower ferrel was split over half it’s length. The total replacement of these five was less than $2000.00 US. The main mast would have cost $100,000. I replaced the four main chain plates 12 years ago when we found them cracked.

Replace the junk or you will experience a failure at a time NOT of your choosing.

Looks like a crack to me... time to replace the whole standing rigging I'd say. We used Dyneema with friction rings instead of SS+rigging screws this time on our 40' timber ketch, very happy with it's simplicity and functionality.

T bolt is suspect

I dont want y’all to loose much more sleep over this. Getting new metal from chainplate to wire. Turns out the chrome bronze turnbuckles are frozen to the Tbolt studs. And that’s after weeks of penetration solvents and some rapping/twisting. I hesitate to use heat. So, I’m done with this mess.
So here is my next thought provoking question. Does standing rigging replacement necessarily require a crane unstepping? I’m new at this, but cant temporary lines be put up to avoid a hauling and crane rental?
Oh, and staying with stainless. Part of my lightning protection system.

Rigging can be replaced mast up, even if you are deck stepped.

No, it isn't at all hard to secure the mast well enough to remove one wire at a time for renewal. Lots of trips up the mast, but sure saves a lot of money. I've done it several times over the years without problems.

exactly what we did in 2019 / 2020. every few months we'd just get another section replaced. spreads the cost...

of course the big advantage in taking the mast down is you can check / replace all sorts of stuff much easier...but you definitely don't need to do it every time you replace rigging.
