I go far enough to make a nice taper without losing diameter at the throat of the splice. If you taper abruptly, or just cut it off square, you are left with a visible shelf or shoulder that's unsightly. If you taper too much and the taper pulls back into the eye, you get a weird thin spot.

Re: Trouble with Liros Herkules eye splice

I theorize that this section of core doesn’t help with the strength, but only keeps the eye full. I read when the double braid splice was first developed they only brought the core to the middle of the eye, this caused early breaking so they changed to full eye and then some to hold it in place.
I got frustrated with the some snagging of burying the core once and came up with a different splice that tested to a little over 90% of ropes strength. Used the same bury lengths but first locked brummelled the cover and core together and then buried this in the core and milked cover back up.

Forgot to state after the locked brummel, the core tail gets buried in the cover tail.

Re: Trouble with Liros Herkules eye splice

If plan A did not work, consider...

B. Knot. Unless the application is absolutely strength dependent (many ropes are sized for wear or stretch), a knot can serve very well. It is also shorter, which sometimes helps.

C. Sewn eye. Just as strong as a splice, if done well, but must be covered for chafe and UV protection. Common in industry. Often the only way with used rope.
