What Are These Horseshoe Looking Things?

Hello CF,

Does anyone have a clew what these are? A small and larger one came with my boat and I've been hauling them around for years thinking some day I might need them, but first I need to know what they are :-)

Thanks!!

Jeff

Jeff:

You need to attach a picture of the horsethingies. Use the paperclip button at the top of the messaging box to attach a file, be sure to "upload" after you select and open the picture file, else the file will not become an attachment to your post.

Welcome to CF.

Hi,
I'm looking at my post and the picture takes up half the page. You don't see it? Not sure why?

Nope, I just see your words from Hello CF through to Jeff. No images embedded or thumbnails attached.

I guess we can wait to see if anyone else sees your horse shoes.

Perchance do they look anything like either of these two?

You need to size down the picture for it to post.

Look in the sticky for the parameters on the pictures.

Sailor's superstition: It is said that if you place a horseshoe on a ship’s mast, it will turn away a storm.

OK, it's obvious that no one can see the image except me. Here's another go at it. I hope it is worth the wait !!

Re: What Are These Horseshoe Looking Things?

My guess is that it's a preventer. The hoseshoe goes on your boom and the line goes forward to a cleat to prevent accidental gybes.

Re: What Are These Horseshoe Looking Things?

I’m not a sailor but I think those are boom vangs used on roller furled sails.
The real sailors here will correct me.

Re: What Are These Horseshoe Looking Things?

How big are they? Where the line is attached seems too week to handle any load.

Re: What Are These Horseshoe Looking Things?

HopCar is correct, with roller reefing on the boom, the vang cannot be attached to the boom. The larger one is for deeper reefing.
