Re: What colour

What ever color you want. I used white lines with colored flecks for halyards toping lifts ect. I then used solid lines for the sheets. as an example my jib sheets were red with white flecks and the jib halyards were white with red flecks. This will cost more overall but gives you a visual key to the lines you are looking for.

Re: What colour

Boats go faster with a specific color but I’m not at liberty to divulge that information.

Re: What colour

Gudgeon has a good idea.

One thing I really DON'T like is different colors for port/starboard (red sheet for port green for starboard). This adds no value and adds confusion. If the spin sheet is blue, it's blue. The starboard one is the one on the starboard side...

If it gets hard to have a consistent thread (spin halyard is white with red, spin sheets are red with white, spin topping lift is???? spin downhaul is????? etc), at least make everything at one area a different color (ie, a bank of 4 clutches have four colors, even if those colors are used elsewhere (so spin topping lift and backstay can be same color).

There are a lot ow ways to organize your cockpit, and a lot of it is based on preference. We rig our boat for ease of handling and efficiency.

More important than the color for spin sheets is the type of line. Spinsheets should be light weight, strong, and float. I use Salsa line which is red. white and yellow single braid dyneema blend. It has a good hand is easy to see in the mess in the cockpit.

Jib sheets and main sheet are distinctive color and also strong, but double braid, dyneema or kevlar core. My jib sheets happen to be blue and white, the main sheet is red and white.

Halyards on the other hand are strongly color coded so make communication easier between foredeck and pit crew. "Ease Blue" is better than "ease the jib halyard". We have red, green and blue halyards, and the pole lift is green and white, the main halyard is black and white, and the tack line (foreguy) is white with a yellow fleck.

So lines are all color coded and with a big crew on tight bouy racing it helps.

Re: What colour

Chartreuse. It has to be a genuinely number 318 chartreuse or the spinnaker will fall off. Accept no substitues.

Re: What colour

Black. No, wait... WHITE. Maybe GREEN? Hold on, I meant to say purple. Or was it lavender?

Definitely lavender. For sure. Helps to keep the boat light on its feet and improve performance.

Re: What colour

I wanted teal w/purple fleck but no stock. So I got green. Of something else. Don't know if it floats. Oh wait it doesn't! Guess we'll be learning inside gybes.

The spin halyards are yellow to port, red to starboard. But at the masthead are yellow to starboard and red to port. Don't know why the rigger did that. Don't know why he hourglassed the chainplates when he drilled them out or rigged the uppers/mids asymetrically at the spreader tips either so there's that.

Clutches...
Portside outboard in: tack line solid blue - spin halyard 1 yellow w/red - genoa grey w/yellow - pig is white w/blue - outhaul is brown/black warpspeed.
Starboard outside in: spin halyard 2 red w/yellow - shiney red babystay tackle - fuzzy red tack reef - dirty white clew reef - main halyard green w/yellow - vang solid blue.

Once around the cans should be good enough to sort out the thinkers.

Crossing the halyards keeps crew weight to windward whilst the sail is hoisted doused to leeward.

Can be confusing but if the hoists and douses are planned for a round the cans course it can reduced the chances of fouled halyards esp. on headsail changes

Re: What colour

Jimmy Green Suggestions for colour coding your running rigging:
Main Halyard = plain white
Main Sheet = plain white or white with a choice of coding
Topping lift = white with a choice of coding
Headsail = solid blue, solid navy, or white/blue
Spinnaker = solid red or white/red
Spinnaker lift = solid yellow or white/yellow
Reef 1 = white/blue Reef 2 = white/red Reef 3 white/yellow
Kicking strap = white with black coding, a black/grey blend or solid black
Outhaul = white with a choice of coding

Red and Green can distinguish between port and starboard lines, e.g. sheets and guys.

Some people avoid green, for superstitious reasons.

Re: What colour

This is simply a matter of preference.
Make sure they don't match any other lines and cause confusion. That's it.

Re: What colour

Small boat. Simple rig. I opted for red jib sheets and white with red flecks for jib halyard. For mainsheet...blue and white w/blue fleck for main hoist.
Few enuff lines that it'd be almost impossible to get confused, tho sometimes I have guests aboard that don't have a clue.
With some of the rigging other boats have, I can see where color-coding is necessary. Where do y'all keep the list with the legend ?

Is there ANY reason this color code is even trivially better than any other? I mean, other than getting another count on the posting meter?

Somebody named Jimmy (who I guess I am supposed to know?) says so? Should I care?

This whole discussion is like arguing about which end of the egg to break first..

Now excuse me while I go out and buy a bunch of green lines. I hear they are good luck and make my boat go faster.
