Looks like an asymmetrical spinnaker to me...

Of course each sailmaker can make up his own name for it (e.g., gennaker)

I agree it looks like an asymmetric spinnaker. Also known as a MPS (multi purpose spinnaker).

Google MPS v spinnaker.

You will find all you need to know and more about screechers, code zero's, cruising code zeros, gennakers, MPS's, and reaching spinnakers.

That could be a symmetrical spinnaker. It's hard to tell from that angle but the clew does look very low for an A sail.

True, but the luff is awfully straight... lots of different takes on reaching sails!

The luff is indeed straight but that could just be luff tension created by the halyard.

I'm with you, I think it's symmetric. Look at the panels on the bottom. Looks to be identical on both sides. There's a bit of twist that's raising the clew to make it look asymmetrical.

I'd call it......Roderick. Just because, but also because of the colours and insignia.

If there were two of them, poled out either side, I'd call them Pamela.

Then again, I might call it a cruising 'chute (to avoid being boarded and keelhauled by Zee), but honestly, I haven't a clew.

Re: What is the proper name for this type of sail

Most symmetric kites have cross-cut panels in the mid section, and this one does not... but isn't the shape of most 'star cut" reaching kites, for it has pretty full shoulders. Also, in many conventional symmetrics, if you stretch the luff that much, to straighten it out there will be distortion in the forward panels due to the material in the luff round. I don't see that here... perhaps the material is stretchy enough to absorb the distortion.

In short, I dunno what to call it! Unusual colour combination, too...

Looks like maybe a drifter of sorts. or a reacher? Doesnt look full enough at the head to be a spinnaker.
