What is this?

I found it somewhere in my boat and cant figure out the use of it. Does anybody here know?

My guess would be a preventer too. Does that profile fit over your boom?

They were briefly popular in the early 1990s but they fell into disuse due to crew shortages. They are called an "educator" and were swung rapidly around like a slingshot before the hook end was embedded in the head of any crew who said "rope" instead of "sheet".

Mermaid fish hook. Remember that you are obligated to throw back any young females and have a limit of two. There is no limit on males, but they are not very tasty.

The other end of the line is attached to the other hole.It's used to free your anchor in crossed anchor situation.Just grab the other boat's chain,fix the device on a cleat and just pull one side up

Once you know what it's for, you can find lots of them on the internet.
Just google "Anchor Line Trip Hook".

Including illustrations of how to use them.

Wow, someone carries a device around just for that? Dont anchor near that guy!

I can only recall having that issue once in decades.

Of course, a crowded venue may make it more likely.
