What Is This ?

We bought our boat in December. I thought this might be the emergency tiller but I found that. Then I thought this could be a handle for the electric windlass, there is no place for it. The last thought is a hand crank for our diesel, but I think hand cranking a 80hp Ford Lehman would be unrealistic.

Thoughts anyone?

Re: What is this?

I would be it's a bung wrench to open an inspection port on a tank
either that or a hand bar to turn over the engine.

Re: What is this?

Not sure, but it does look like a hand crank for an engine.

Re: What is this?

Look on the front of engine does this match any holes on crank. My 2 cylinder volvo had a hand crank. Just release compression and crank like hell. My other guess would be a sailor atitude adjustment wand.

Re: What is this?

That is the emergency crank handle for a Maxwell windlass. You have to remove the drum before mounting the handle on the gypsy.

Re: What is this?

That could be my missing emergency tiller. Actually it looks like an engine crank - not to start it, just to turn it.

Re: What is this?

If those pins on that plate are about 1/4", judging the scale, you better hope that is not for starting a diesel.

Re: What is this?

That is definately NOT a hand crank for a Diesel,,Chucksk sounds like he knows.
If you tried to start a diesel with that you would lose an Arm for sure.

Re: What Is This ?

You don't handcrank a 80hp modern diesel even if it did have compression release which it probably doesn't.

This would require a partial disassemble of the windlass to use. I have not taken it apart to see as we are heading out tomorrow. I will check the first chance I have.

As for the hand crank diesel. This thing is a monster and I don't even like having the engine room open when it is running, much less being in there trying to start it.
