Re: What is this spliced loop called?

Shew and I was surprised when I saw soft shackles in my local shops for $15 each when I use $5 of dyneema and a bit of my time to make one

Same is true of any manufactured article in a shop. Raw material is generally only a small fraction of the final selling price.

How much do you get paid an hour for whatever you do for a living? IOW, what's that "little bit of your time" actually worth?

Those of us who enjoy ropework make our own soft shackles, splices, loops etc for pleasure, but if you cost your time in that $15 ain't so bad.

Re: What is this spliced loop called?

Why are soft shackles useful?

Let me count the ways :

They:
- Are inexpensive given their SWL
- Are lightweight
- Are safe (won't wallop you over the head)
- Decrease damage to whatever they are in contact with
- Don't corrode
- Float
- Don't need equipment to open them
- Can be easily opened after heavy load
- Have no parts to lose
- Are reliable
- Are versatile
- Are quiet

And when made well they are simply mini works of art .

Re: What is this spliced loop called?

Just came across these on Amazon. If really made of dyneema, then a fantastic price.
