What Is This Winch?

Hey CF,

Could anyone tell me what this winch is for on the bottom of my main mast boom? The mizzen does not have one.

Thanks,

Jeff

Thanks Atoll. Now that I know what it is, I Googled slab reefing and found a lot of great articles, including proper use, pros and cons, etc. It appears to be the way to go for "at the mast" sail reefing.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!

no worries mate

is a relatively good system once you get the hang of it.

technique with main up.
first release mainsheet and depower sail.
then drop the sail with the main hayard as far as the eye in the bolt rope insert into horn at the gooseneck, then retighten main halyard,
then pull in corresponding reefing line untill taught, then tighten on the winch and apply brake or tie off to cleat once leach is pulled tight at the end of the boom.
you may need to tighten the topping lift to raise the boom a bit also
tighten mainsheet

Hi, Mikado,

We had a little self-tailer for that on our first Insatiable. Worked a treat, and gives you a spare hand.
