Well Jim, Ann and you are definitely great minds. I'm just proud when I button my shirt up and it lines up perfectly.Don as far as being trolled, I doubt it. Trolls don't put in this much effort.

Re: What Sail Is This?

Foresail from a staysail schooner, fitted with early furling gear. Slides in the foil, before luff tapes came into use.

The first generation foils used to take regular bolt ropes.

Re: What Sail Is This?

It might not be either- there are sails that hoist high between masts in ketch and schooner rigs, staysails, etc.

Re: What Sail Is This?

Could it be a storm trisail? These are rigged to track for mainsail and uses sheets to trim to aft corners of transom

I'll put $5.00 on the mainsail theory.

Those are reef cringles.

A headsail or spinnaker never attaches to the main track. If there are track slides, it might be for a furler.

It looks like a sail that doesn't fit your boat. Maybe it was for shade or for spare sailcloth.

Re: What Sail Is This?

Just because it is folded down the middle means nothing. It is a mainsail from another boat. Probably pulled from a dumpster to salvage the slugs. The fact that you think it is a symetrical spinnaker shows your knowledge level so you may want to be a little less argumentative.

Lay the whole thing flat on the grass and send us a pic.

Being a 'helpful' type, I'll hold the money for all of those betting on the outcome until such time a decision is reached . . .

Re: What Sail Is This?

It has a headboard and a luff that had slugs. You only have three options. Mainsail, mizzen sail or trysail.

Re: What Sail Is This?

A spinnaker. That is, a heavy air kite, not made for racing or for decoration.
A sail someone could hoist that would hold up for long periods, and heavy enough to NOT be trim-sensitive. If reaching, a pole would be good, but a better sail for going deep downwind.
