What value would you put on this survey?

So, about to deliver this boat and I've been doing my own survey.

I have read the pre purchase survey and it identified such serious issues as a crack in the ceiling lining and a missing retaining line on the fuel filler cap. 30 pages of utter rubbish.

Buried deep in the survey is an entry stating "Mast, boom, spreaders, stays and rigging was well secured and in good working condition".

Followed by an asterix noting that the rigging was visually inspected only as the surveyor is not a qualified rigger.

I will never know if the surveyor then went on verbally to say something to the new owner, like "but hey, you REALLY need a rig survey because it's a sailing boat and therefore I've only surveyed about half of this boat you want to buy."

But how in seven hells could they have missed this? (And yes, that's the only forestay on a fractional rig 38 footer.)

(They also missed an extremely frayed top safety wire that had been electrically taped, right where it enters the stanchion. The survey states these wires were tight with no frays.)Click image for larger version

Awww Matt, just look how shiny that shackle is! What could possibly go wrong there?

Jim, I’m chasing some longer stainless plate thingies, but I’ve gone blank on what they are called?

Yep Link Plates are what the stainless thingies are.

Can easily be done in situ - Secure rig with Spinny and Genoa Halyard forward to take the load of the Forestay when removed (and also pull the mast forward) Then Just back off the back stay (you may need to do V1s and D1s) as well - Mark thread positions with tape so you know where the rig was originally before backing off.

Yeah, something like that. Not so easy with this rig. Bloody fractional with swept spreaders. Aaargh.

Re: What value would you put on this survey?

And I just realised there is no toggle, so longer link plates will just create a new problem.

Re: What value would you put on this survey?

Perhaps adding a toggle in place of the shackle would add enough length ANDsolve the articulation problem as well.

Yes, it’s a possibility. Just having trouble finding parts in Townsville.

Also, the mast rake appears a little excessive based on looking online and comparing with another Northshore 38 in the marina. Not keen to stuff around with the rake tho, not without sailing the boat first.

I may yet have to settle for a newer and MUCH bigger shackle to get me to Airlie or somewhere I can get hold of rigging bits.

Re: What value would you put on this survey?

Matt, there are some decent places for stuff in Gladstone, and of course Brissy is better, still. Gladstone is very industrial, and lots of options for solving problems. The marina has always been yachtie friendly. A very strong, big Galvanized shackle might do you. Look in agricultural places.

If possible, you should use a toggle there. If you can get proper forestay tension, that rake may diminish significantly.

I’ll pop around to the chandlery tomorrow, they say they may have what I need.

On the upside, the winds are still blowing from the the south so no problems staying on and getting the boat seaworthy.

Re: What value would you put on this survey?

It's been a long time since we were in Airlie Beach, but people used to take the bus into Proserpine (all day trip) to look for boat stuff they needed ASAP. The north Qld Coast is not full of well equipped chandleries, but they can order in whatever you need. It just all takes time.

Thanks Ann, good heads up.

I ended up settling on a rated galvanised shackle for the interim. Just as you suggested.

I’ll see if I can find a toggle in Brisneyland.
