The pattern makers used what is/was called a shrink rule. There would be a specific one for each metal to be poured. It was proportionally oversized depending on the metal.

The whole casting process was described to me by an elderly gentleman whose family ran a machine shop and foundry. When they closed the business, they had a warehouse full of wooden patterns that knowing the care and precision used to make them, he was loath to dispose of. He gave me several and I've made a table from two.
