Which manufacturer uses the trident logo?

I'd like to find a matching padeye. I lost one while doing work on my deck. They have a trident logo on stamped into them. Is it Schaefer? The only website with a trident logo I can see is the hose company. Thanks.

Re: Which manufacturer uses the trident logo?

Hi. Please post a photo with dimensions or a rule next to the one you have and I’ll see if I can find you a match in my collection. If your pockets are fathoms deep you can pull the existing padeye and have one cast. Some of the older boat yards and consignment stores might have a match or someone on this forum, but dimensions will be a big help.
Kind regards, mark the manatee

It's Merriman/Holbrook
RigRite has a lot of that stuff, if you can reach him.
You might be better off tossing the one you have left and buying a matching pair of some other brand.

Our Bristol has the trident emblem on all the cleats, I was thinking just other day about who the manufacturer was, thanks Hudson Force.

I've done this for a number of parts and found it to be surprisingly inexpensive. As long as you have a part that they can make a pattern off of, their labor is very limited. They just make a sand casting of the part and pour it. Depending on your arrangement with them and your budget, you can let them do the finishing work or do it yourself.

Find out where artists go locally to have their bronze sculptures cast.

The guy that I used did a lot of wall plaques for offices and cemeteries. I never put any time pressure on him and he did mine along with other jobs.

The biggest job was a set of four bronze frames for deadlights that were about 4 feet long. I made up the pattern out of hardboard, complete with grooves to hold caulk. It turned out exactly the way that I wanted. Since I drilled the countersunk holes in the pattern, I even got the finished part with the holes in place. It just needed to be cleaned up and the holes reamed.

Once you have some success with having your own made up, you will look at things differently.

On the other hand... if you found a match ... go for it.

I had a stanchion base cast. No biggie.

In the trivia department my wife’s grandfather owned a pattern shop that did work for Merriman Brothers.
We have some lamps and furniture he made, but no patterns.

I have had Port Townsend Foundry do custom bronze castings for me in the past (https://www.porttownsendfoundry.com). As others have said, if they can use your existing part as a pattern it shouldn't be very expensive - it is the pattern that is expensive to make. And yes, it would be a Merriman-Holbrook part; I have lots of them on my boat and they are high quality.

Re: Which manufacturer uses the trident logo?

Unfortunately you can not just use an existing part as a pattern because the molten metal shrinks as it cools, and the casting is a bit smaller than the original in every dimension.

Pattern makers use considerable skill and knowledge to compensate for the shrinkage... it is a melding of artistry and science to make a good pattern. I've tried with marginal success to make simple patterns and it ain't easy!

For the OP, these sorts of hardware bits often show up in second hand boat bits type stores. Some research is likely to locate one for you.

That is a good point about shrinkage. When I made my own pattern, I did multiply each dimension by the percent shrinkage that the foundry gave me. It didn't change the task, just the dimensions. After it was poured the part came out the correct size.

Patterning off of an existing piece is still OK in my book. On small pieces the difference in size isn't very great dimensionally and the proportions are still perfect. In Bronze it is only 1 to 2 percent shrinkage. If the part isn't going into an assembly, you'll never notice. That would be like 1/64th of an inch on a 2 inch long piece. If you chrome plate it, you're almost back to size.

I think we assumed that you understood: Merriman-Holbrook has not made bronze boat parts in years. The production of bronze parts pretty much moved to Taiwan and China, aside from low volume and custom production. Even US foundries, like Newfound Metals, sent their patterns to China for production. In the past the Chinese producers made knockoffs so they may be around as well.

Re: Which manufacturer uses the trident logo?

^^Sad but true. For foundries local to my area (US NE), there is Edson, who will do side jobs in casting, and the Mystic Foundry, where all the wood boat people go for floors and chainplates and such.
