Re: Winch Pawl for 1969 Columbia 22

Perhaps South Coast? I am racking my brain trying to remember the "other" brand of top-action winches, slide in handle, etc. that were common in the 60s. Was it Racelite South Coast?

South Coast and Wilcox-Crittenden are the two brands in addition to Merriman. The South Coast looks very similar to what I have. Here is picture of a like-new 3-inch South Coast someone is offering for $2,000. Looks very much like my winch. Shiny one wouldn't match, though.

That looks very much like the winches supplied on my Catalina 22 (hull #61) that I b ought in ~1969/70, and they were South Coast. Lousy winch design, poor bearings, so 2000 bucks for one made me laugh.

for the OP: in your place, before spending much at all in refurbishing those winches, consider replacing with used Barients or Lewmars or other good winches. Older, non self tailing small winches can be had pretty cheaply, and they will be way better than your current models.

Re: Winch Pawl for 1969 Columbia 22

They look like the flat handle Wilcox-Crittenden winches to me. Should be a logo and size stamped if they are. I'm rethinking that they are not WC, because WC winches had two round barstock pawns with a spring between them. They were the most common winch made before the '70s. But don't think your pawn is WC.

There are a couple of South Coast winches for sale on EBay.

I would at least price out a machine shop... you might be surprised how reasonable they are.

Are they #2 winches? If so, I have a handful of spare pawls.
