Nigel, I ended up doing what you suggested.

I spliced the 16mm octoplait on a slightly smaller thimble (one for 14mm rope still fitted snuggly), then frapped the two sides with a Single Tatted Bar, leaving room at the apex for some dyneema to be cow hitched on. The small amount of frapping used 3m of 3mm rope!

This is how it looks. The dyneema used to go over the bow roller will be thicker though. I will probably make a long single dyneema strop with eye spices on both sides:
