Fridge Acting Weird

Adler Barbour unit with evaporator plate freezer and spill over small fridge. Runs well but when it cycles off it re-cycles again in less than ten seconds for a very short time and then cycles off. It is doing this every time it cycles.

On for a cycle of a few minutes, off for five seconds then on for about 20 seconds then off till the next cycle. Cooling well but this stutter cycle has me wondering.

Any ideas?

Re: Fridge Acting Weird

Maybe, but you can prove it conclusively by jumping the thermostat connections.
If it still acts up, it's not the thermostat. If it runs ok then, obviously bad thermostat.

If you jumper the thermostat, it will run continuously and never cycle?

Yes this is what happened with the last thermostat. It ran all the time and I was the cycler by switching the unit on and off.

I got another thermostat off a guy in the boatyard and thas is the one thst is acting up. Does anyone know a good vendor to get a new one? I googled this with poor results.

How does this work with the Adler Barbour unit wiring?

Re: Fridge Acting Weird

Just found the schematics wire up with power to lugs 3&4 the sensor to lugs 5&6 and the existing two stat wires to lugs 1&2 lugs 1&2 and 5&6 are non polarity . Works fine with my 12volt refer .

Re: Fridge Acting Weird

Newhaul's right about that thermostat.
I have the same one (except mine's a 120 volt version) on my hot tub.
It's programmable.

Re: Fridge Acting Weird

I had the same problem with an Alder Barber. I tried the thermostat thing, but found a slightly corroded connection on the compressor unit that allowed 12 volts to pass to the unit until the compressor kicked on. Then the volts dropped to 9.8, well below to 10.5 volt minimum allowed by the controller.

Re: Fridge Acting Weird

Actually the problem has fixed itself. I've been waiting for the local guy to get me a new thermostat but it was the holiday season and nothing got done. I still haven't heard from him. I didn't order the electronic one because I can't wait for the mail from China. But the fridge and thermostat are working fine now. It might be a corrosion problem as crosswire indicated.
