How would you mount a figurehead to the bow?

Hi Everyone,

I’m thinking of adding a figurehead under the small bowsprit on Sailor’s Soul. Has anyone done so it the past? Do you think it would look good? And is there a way to mount these without cutting into the hull? Thanks for any ideas/suggestions.

Below is a picture of the boat and the two figureheads I think may look good on the bow.

Suggest you mount her in a more private location

Just yesterday I asked a friend if I could make a casting of her chest for the bow of my boat. Come to find out, she has a mean right hook. I took it as a no.

Ha ha ha. Thanks guys. It may seem like a silly idea. I always liked the traditional look of the figureheads on old ships. I was thinking a small, classy one would look good on the bow.

Nearby my berth there is a boat with a full-sized figure. Don't know how it is attached to the boat, however. Bolted on from rods extending through the feet?

This is probably not what you want to hear, but no, I think it would look silly. What looks good on the Cutty Sark does not necessarily translate well to a small f/g yacht.

Opinion only, ymmv.

Cheers,

Jim

I like mine, I just wish I could keep the commercial fishers from fondling her.

You need a bowsprit for a figurehead.....a bow roller does not really count .

I think it would look silly (on the boat design) - unless it was done very well (and IMO that likely to involve some humour!).

Fixing - I would imagine a couple of bolts into the hull would be needed, her behind would be shaped to fit the bow (and not vice verce).

It's better to have a figurehead who also helps out as crew, mixes drinks, and so forth.

I second that!!

Now, to me is not how it would look, but the effect on sailing performance. The bow profile looks rather short so you either put a dworf figure or install it with a diving mask

I don't think that's such a bad idea. I can visualize a small model of a swimmer with fins, wet suit and face mask bolted up under the bow anchor roller platform and also to the hull. Maybe one of those miniature models you see in the dive shop counters/displays. . .

Re: How would you mount a figurehead to the bow?

Unless its the size of a barbie doll it will be torn off in the first big sea, due to the lack of freeboard on the boat.

If you look at traditional ships that have them, the FHs are quite high out of the water. and much of their height is reduced as they tend to lean foreward-often more than 60 degrees, which keeps them away from pounding waves.

Modern boats dont have them for several reasons. They dont suit the design. The are added weight in the bow and modern boats dont have bow sprits long enough to hold one.

Save your money and buy a pirate flag instead!
