HYPALON PAINT REMOVAL

Need to remove paint and Sharpie marker registration numbers from my Hypalon rib. What should I use that will not compromise the Hypalon material? I've read Soft Scrub, acetone (sparingly), tuolene (sp?). But none of these recommendations were overwhelming supported. I can contact the manufacturer but thought I'd give a shout out to the Forum first. Thanks!

Re: HYPALON PAINT REMOVAL

Depends upon what sort of paint is involved. Not sure, but I believe that any solvent that would attack real Hypalon paint would also attack the hull Hypalon. Acetone is safe on Hypalon, toluene less so. I expect that any solvent based removal would leave tell tale marks on the hull... if that's important to you.

You could carefully sand it off, but I think in your place I'd paint over it (assuming that you want to put new rego numbers on).

Re: HYPALON PAINT REMOVAL

I spent the Autumn refurbishing an Avon dinghy. Previously owner marked it with a black marker and having taken the rubbing strip off needed, to clean the old glue off before applying another but thinner layer of hypalon. The original thick plastic rubbing strip doesn't roll up very well, were as a single new layer of hypalon will.

Sanded the hypalon with 80 grid flap wheel to remove the glue and then went over it with Acetone. Cleaned up nicely including the marker pen letters.

Wear gloves if you are using Acetone and outdoors only. This is the before picture from the original advert. Now with a newly painted transom looks much smarter.
