Re: Lifting dinghy out for the night

C&M-
I think S/V Delos posted a video about the night they heard a splash, and found their dingy in the water with someone trying to steal it. Just be aware that hoisting it alongside, still leaves a tempting target for thieves, especially when the engine is on it.

We really don't care for davits, but acknowledge that we're certainly in the minority! The thing about davits is, you don't HAVE to use them when you dont want to! But in places like the Caribe, there are many short day trips to the next destination. Maybe 15 miles, on the lee side of the island. You can spend 2 hours getting the dink on deck and the motor on the stern pulpit and making a mess on the mother ship, getting slime off the dingy bottom on lines and sails, etc.........or you can spend 10 minutes and raise the dink into the davits and go!
OK, I'll get off my davit promotion mode now!

Thank you hellosailor.
Not concerned about theft, but it would be easier to steal simply cleated off our stern as we normall do.

That one's different because the lines are over the stern tubes, not using the rings provided by the dinghy manufacturer.

A buddy made a lifting STRAP rig pretty much like that. In practice, he doesn't take them off the stern, which, in many areas, will result in a foul fabric or line...

Right, skip. Just showing a variation idea. The loops he said were easier to make than buying and installing eye bolts in the transom.

Re: Lifting dinghy out for the night

Most nights we lift our 3.3m RIB, with f/g hull and 2nd floor (heavy) plus our 15hp Yamaha 2-cycle with our 4:1 block+tackle davit. If the wx is particularly bad or the next open water trip really long, we use a spinnaker halyard and hoist her onto the foredeck and into the cradle we have mounted there. I installed a thrubolt and eye on ea side of the transom (near the tubes so as to not interfere with the o/b) and we have 2 eyes mounted on the fwd floor, just aft of the bow locker. Made a harness out of dynema with snaps, and added knots to get the floor angle correct. The mast-mounted winch does the job of raising her up. Keeps the bottom clean, prevents theft, and seems to work well. Have used the same spinnaker halyard since 2011, with no sign of chaff yet-we take them down every year and wash/check them when we go on the hard for summer hurricane storage in Puerto Rico.

Re: Lifting dinghy out for the night

So, as an alternate method, which bottom paint works on inflatable tubes?
I assume for the aluminum hull in my case I’d use the paint people put on saildrives, but what about the tubes?

I use the same paint that I use on my boat, Petit Hydrocoat. Petit actually sells bottom paint just for inflatables by the quart but the Petit rep I spoke with at Defenders sale a few years ago told me it was the same thing as Hydrocoat but with a different label. So I started using Hydrocoat and it works just fine on my fiberglass/hypalon RIB with 20hp Mercury motor.

Re: Lifting dinghy out for the night

In regards to the OP’s concern about halyard chafe at the sheave, using the spinnaker halyard is a good option but another possibility is to use one of your running back stays if you have them. Mine have a 4:1 tackle with a cam cleat and snap shackle on the end so would be pretty easy to attach to the harness and pull it out of the water. Just another possibility if you don’t have a halyard you feel comfortable pulling to the side.

While I'm down to davit hoist the dinghy as well for short hops, I just gotta say... two hours on deck!!! I'm sure you're exaggerating, but even so, we can hoist and stow motor on pushpit and hoist and invert 3.3 m solid alu dinghy on deck in 7 minutes. We timed it once. It really is that quick.

We have them, and that possibly could work, though I'd have to redo the hoist assembly, as our RBs terminate not much above deck level, making it such that our long-line hoist assembly would not have the dink out of the water. But it has the mechanical advantage our windlass does not, other than the length of the crank handle. Our freeboard is 4 and change at the point of lift, and our rails 30" so we're close to a 7' height from the water when we clip on.
