Lubricating Steering Sheaves

Hello,

What product to clean and what product to re-lubricate the sheaves on our cable driven steering system?

Thanks in advance!

Bearing grease stays in place well but I’ve started using Superlube which stays in place and doesn’t harden over time. If you are dismantling the components to clean them properly naphtha cuts grease very well.

Mine are ball bearings. Cleaned with kerosene (not far from naphtha ) and greased with a good lubriplate grease.

Edson recommends lubricating steering components with Teflon Grease.

Re: Lubricating Steering Sheaves

Those are low speed and low temperature bearings without containers that could hold gear oil. Any bearing grease will do, but some will last longer, and the Teflon grease is a particularly good choice. It is more important that you squeeze grease into the bearings carefully (messy job!) after you clean them and determine that the bearings do not need replacement. Once clean, they should turn very easily in your hand without any bumps, and visibly have no rusted spots.

You can pack bearings in your hands - hold the bearing in one hand, pile greas on top, and use the heel of your palm to force it into the spaces between the balls. If you do a lot of them, here's the tool:
