Older Zodiac question re: inflating

I recently acquired an older (~2002) Zodiac 290 inflatable and have been struggling to inflate it. The valves are consistent with what is described online as "Zodiac Parts | Semi-Recessed Valve Cap with Collar (Black) - Z60052"

I tried a Halkey-Roberts Valve Adapter but haven't been successful using that. It seems like the right tool for the job, so I'll keep fiddling with it. But if anyone out there has suggestions, insights or experience with this particular model, I'd be grateful for suggestions.

My now-discarded 2000 Zodiac had a cap like shown in the link, but the stationary part on the hull had a center twist shaft w/ an arrow point. It rotated about 30°, w/ one stop permitting air in/out and the other stop preventing air movement.
