Tire Lock

I need to add a spare tire to my trailer, and came across this one on Amazon. It says it is locking, but for the life of me, I can't see how this would work or the purpose of the lock here at all.

Re: Tire Lock

I once saw an outboard locked onto a chain, which was then attached to the dinghy with a simple nut and bolt. This looks like pretty much the same concept. Might confuse really dumb thieves.

Re: Tire Lock

Those metal tangs might be threaded...just guessing...the nut will come off easy enough course, but being unable to rotate the tangs, the wheel can't be removed..

my 2c...

Re: Tire Lock

Just use the lug nuts that require a special socket. If really paranoid, use two different ones to really confuse the thieves. All you have to do is make the neighbor's spares look easier to steal than yours.

That is a good thought. I am not seeing that in the pictures though, it appears to just slip on/off.

Re: Tire Lock

no, if you read one of the Amazon reviews, you'll see where the buyer sez you have to screw the tang on..I've seen similar one's before....there is a thread cut into the tang...not much of a thread, but enough to thread it on.

Oh cool. I never read through the reviews. Thanks for clearing that up.

Confirmed!!!! I dug around and found a You Tube Video. The locking tangs are threaded.

I didn't catch this last update before I submitted my previous post.

Re: Tire Lock

Yes, the tangs are threaded. I have one, but there were no separate hex nuts as shown, although there was a non-locking model with just the nuts.

The male threads are the ends of a u-bolt that goes around the frame of the trailer.

It looks chintzy (and is cheaper) compared to other more robust spare tire mounts. But while you can lock the spare to those mounts, a wrench can remove the mount.

That would explain it, but if they are threaded it would be easier to put them on AFTER the lug nuts were on, rather than before. The way it is set up in the picture you have to remove the lug nuts, unlock the padlock, and then take the tangs off in order to remove them. More work than necessary. You probably don't want to leave them on when trailing the boat.
