Re: Whaly 270 Won't Plane

Just for info. I weight 100kg and can plane my Whaly 270 solo with 6hp yamaha 4stroke. Max speed then is 20kmh. But then no other gear can be in boat.
And stock 6hp wont get on plane with me. I needed less pitch prop and Maxi Marine lifters.

Sounds like your problem is the short shaft.

The anti-cavitation plate should be about 1.5" below the bottom of the hull. I don't think you can get that with a short shaft.

Talk to the people with the Whaly you saw planing. Betcha they have a long shaft.

Re: Whaly 270 Won't Plane

I owned a whaly 310 for a while before it was stolen, which was a relief because I hated it.

The boat was rated for 10hp or 15hp, i had a 25hp Yamaha on it and it would rarely plane with myself, wife and 2 toddlers you needed to be going downwind.

The bottom is very flat and rides terribly in any sort of chop.

The boat is partially filled with "closed cell" foam, but after a few months of use I noticed water ingress inside the hull and the foam seemed to soak it up. There is a separate drain plug to drain this area but I was never able to get water to drain out of it because behind the drain plug was the foam they poured in there. I never was able to find out how the water entered the hull. But I ended up drilling a couple holes on top of the tubes to drain the water out. These boats are heavy enough without water trapped inside the hull.

The integral "knobs" on the tops of the tubes are the only attachment points for use with davits, they are not strong enough to support the boat and motor being lifted . Granted I had a larger motor than recommend but it is only an additional 50lbs . I like to assume any dinghy hanging on davits should be able to hold the weight of the dinghy filled with water.

I broke off 4 of the factory lifting points and had fabricate my own lifting points after that.

When I purchased my Whaley 310, I also purchased a Whaly 370 for a client , I outfitted his boat with a center console, and Yamaha 25hp (max rating) The Whaly 370 would barely plane with 2 people in it . All the problems I had with the 310 transfered to the 370. My client suffered from water ingress which was impossible to remove without drilling holes in the boat. Also had failure of attachment points.

I like the concept of roto molded boats , I also like the idea of rigid inflatable style boats , but I could not recommend any of the whalys for a cruising boat tender.
