Whaly 270 Won't Plane

Hoping for some idea/suggestions here. I have a Whaly 270. It's rated to 10hp and I currently have a Mercury 9.9 fourstroke on it. It won't plane. I borrowed a friend's Yamaha 15 2 stroke. Still wouldn't get up on a plane.

Does anyone have any experience. I love the little boat, but it's going to be mighty tedious trudging along if I can't get it up on a plane.

It says on the brochure that it’s rated up to 8hp but I just watched a youtube vid of a 270 with a 9.9 on the plane with two on board.
Is the angle of tilt ok?
Does it need a long leg outboard?
How about fitting a set of those aftermarket hydrofoil wings?
Pete.

I'd try the wings. If they don't work, get a longer dinghy.

I only just found out that tilt angle is a thing I should investigate. I tried adjusting the tilt with the 15 without the hydrofoils, I'm going to try it with my foiled 9.9 tonight when I get home. It has a 16.5" transom, so I think the short shaft should be good.

Thank you for the reply!

Yeah. I really wanted the hard dinghy as I got tired of patching punctures in my inflatables. The 310 was a bit too heavy for my davits I think. (Although I haven't actually found any one who can tell me how much the davits on a Lagoon 410 S1 will hold)

Thank's for the thought.

We have a larger Whaly as a safety boat at our club and the guys setting up the seat, tank, etc. put it too far forward and the bows would not come up when throttled up. I helped shift everything further back to get the bows up and it planes like a champ.

Yes, the tilt angle will make all the difference. On the plane the motor leg should be vertical.

I had a similar situation with a brand new 10' aluminum hull inflatable with a brand new 9.9 Mercury.....the bow would come up but it wouldn't plane. Long story short, I concluded it was prop cavitation. I bought and installed a wing cavitation plate, it helps a bunch but not like a larger motor might.

Thanks! I had the wife sitting on the bow when I was trying to plane it doubled; I'll have her move back some and give it a shot.

Yeah, I was able to get it up on a plane singled yesterday with the 15 hp. I am going to go ahead and buy the 15 I found and put wings on it. I'll see what happens with that.

When I was in the Caribbean, people were buying the AB and Caribe RIBs like hotcakes. The ones that bought the short models were invariably disappointed with their performance. A 310 aluminum RIB weighs a lot less than a Whaly 270, which is also important when you are trying to drag it up a beach.

Re: Whaly 270 Won't Plane

Hello,
I'am using 10' RIB AB, with 20 HP 4 stroke.
Had the same problem with me sitting beside the outboard.
With transom completely down and most weight at the rear,
the dinghy noose was pointing upward, even with 20 l. gasoline tank in the locker.
It made a "big" wave and it was very uncomfortable to sit on.
Then I tried to change transom angle, just moved the rod 1hole and it came
perfect.
So it's not just a question of HP.
Good luck.

Re: Whaly 270 Won't Plane

I had an 11 foot tinny with a 9.8hp.
Wouldn't plane with 2-3 aboard.
Wouldn't plane solo if sitting on aft seat.
But tiller was firm, wouldn't turn side to side unless told to by hand. I'd open her up straight, walk to bow, stand on forward seat holding the bow line, bounce abit and she'd pop up onto plane to chine steer like a surfboard.
Tilt and weight were my refusals to plane.

Re: Whaly 270 Won't Plane

Just an update on this. (for other Whaly woes)

I've gone to a Yamaha 15hp 2 stroke. Added wings. Adjusted the angle. All of that, so far still results in not planing with 2 people.

The boat is 170# Max load on it is ~800# incl the engine (which weighs 75#).

The prop the engine had on originally was a 9.25 x 11. I'm thinking the prop isn't getting to the necessary RPM with that pitch and am trying a lower pitch prop 9.25 x 10 and seeing what that does. It should be here on Tuesday.

Any luck with the new prop ? I’d really like a whaly 270 but if I won’t be able to
Plain with two people might have to get an inflatable…

Anyone else manage to get up on plain with a 15hp 2 stroke ?
