I used one of these:

and they worked just great on up to 3 layers of new 8oz dacron.

I am surprised you say that Pfaff does not have the walking foot as I remember using some very basic (and very old) Pfaffs that did!

I also used an old Bernina once and that was probably mechanically the smoothest toy I ever applied to canvas. But it was not easy to tune! Still - all metal parts, etc.. It came at 60 USD or something like that from a garage sale.

Claryfying:

I have used one of the (new) Hobby series and judged from how it managed layered dacron I took the walking foot was on it. You can't go wrong by simply asking the seller or asking for a demonstration if you buy from a Pfaff representative.

I also used very old, very basic Pfaffs - these definitely had walking feet.

Do get a walking foot machine in any case (!!!). Zig-zag a must and triple step zig-zag not a bad thing either.
