3/8 ISO chain on 10mm ISO gypsy

I have a Lofrans Caymann with a gypsy marked with P30. Its for a 10mm chain and when I measure my chain its stacks up to 30mm pitch.

I need to replace the chain and that chain is not available in the US. Strange as this is a popular windlass and I think it is the standard gypsy for this model.

The available chain that come closest is 3/8 G4. It has a 1.22" pitch with equates to 31mm. Close.

Does anyone have knowledge it this chain will work on above windlass/gypsy.

Thanks

Re: 3/8 ISO chain on 10mm ISO gypsy

There are 2 sizes of 10mm chain and lofrans make gypsies for both ! 31 should fit in a p30 but take a piece of chain to be sure.

Re: 3/8 ISO chain on 10mm ISO gypsy

There is the DIN which has a 28mm pitch and the ISO which has 30mm. I got the 30mm.

Thanks

You can order different gypsies for the Lofrans windlasses. You might even find one on fleabay.

I think you are incorrect on 2 counts.

First Lofran Windlasses sold in North America come standard with gypsys for
1/4HT, 5/16HT, 3/8HT, 5/16 BBB, 3/8 BBB, and 8mm.
Typically 5/16 HT or 3/8 HT.

Also metric chain is available in North America, may have to be ordered by the dealer.

According to Lofrans the gypsy for the Cayman that fits 10mm also fits 3/8HT chain.

My new one came from Spain. I ordered it for 3/8" G4 chain. Don't just order the windlass without specifying the chain, is my suggestion. Don't assume it will fit your chain.

Re: 3/8 ISO chain on 10mm ISO gypsy

In my experience one cannot mix imperial and metric chains and gypsies. The chain is either exactly right or it will give problems like jumping links and will eventually destroy the gypsy (the chain will always survive).

To make sure, take the gypsy and wrap the chain fully around it. The last link must fit exactly into its slot precisely the same as the first. If it is even a tiny bit too long or too short, it will not work properly and the gypsy will suffer the consequences.

I bought 80 metres of “metric” chain in America some years ago and had endless problems with the chain jumping links, snatching and jerking. I finally bit the bullet a short while ago, threw the old chain out and matched Italian metric chain exactly to the gypsy and it now reels the chain in smoothly and efficiently.

Luckily the gypsy was not too badly damaged by the bad chain and still works OK. In New Zealand a Lofrans gypsy replacement can be eye-wateringly costly.
