8-Strand Rode-to-Chain Splice, How To?

Hello Forum Members,
Can anyone please help direct me to info on how to do a proper 8-strand rode-to-chain splice? I'm fairly competent with 3-strand and braid-on-braid splicing, but haven't had the interest, desire, or need to work with 8-strand. I'm now in a situation where it's being forced upon me. All of the YouTube how-to videos I've seen, are for eye-splices, and butt-splices. The existing splice on my anchor chain looks similar to a butt splice. Thank you!

I've used the technique shown here: http://www.yalecordage.com/pdf/brait...ain_splice.pdf

It works well, and goes through the windlass gypsy with no trouble.

Google some man. There are two ways to do this splice. I actually prefer the reverse splice, without splicing into the chain. But this may not work with a winch.

BlueMoment - Articles

3 strand and 8 strand rode to chain splice. Tension chain with a bungee to help keep it straight and neat. Second try will lay better than first

Re: 8-Strand Rode-to-Chain Splice, How To?

A big thank you to everyone who responded, it's all been helpful.
In the past, using 3-strand, I've preferred doing the crown/back/reverse splice onto the last chain link. I've not experienced any problems with that in the windlass gypsy. When seeing the other splice on other boats, I've wondered how well it goes through the gypsy.
Any thoughts or advantages of either splice over the other, please?

That looks like the same splice as in the link I posted above (http://www.yalecordage.com/pdf/brait...ain_splice.pdf)

Nice photos in your instructions. It's useful to see these splices from multiple perspectives.

Unless it is necessary because you use a windlass I would not splice rope directly to chain as the chain rusts quicker where it is permanently in contact with wet rope

Re: 8-Strand Rode-to-Chain Splice, How To?

Thank you, Slainte1,
That's the very reason why I would shy away from the splice that weaves the rope into several chain links. No matter which splice is used, I should think it a good idea to regularly give the chain/rode connection as much sun and airing-out on deck, as possible, i.e. whilst in a marina, to keep that part of the rode as dry as possible, rather than in a dark, damp locker.

This is the splice and diagram I used to splice on to chain for maxwell windlass. Have had no problem with it going through wimdlass.
