ABI Windlass Gypsy

I have an ABI 800 two speed manual windlass- works great, but I want to swith from 3/8 to 5/16 chain and am in search of a gypsy. Any thoughts on where to look? I've seen the SL parts site where I can get the correct sized gypsy for the 555 sea tiger, but the brake pads are slightly different from the ABI clone.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Re: ABI Windlass Gypsy

I tried to track down a place to have a gypsy machined for an ABI and ran across Plath in Portland, Oregon that would do it. Depending on where you are in the world that might be an ok option. Good luck. I believe nearly all ABI were set up for 3/8" proof coil and anything different is really hard to find.

I called and talked with them and if I had not been in Hawaii I would have had them help me with my project. Just too hard from long distance when shipping is an issue..

Re: ABI Windlass Gypsy

Hi Offpath, was wondering how you made out with your gypsy conversion.
I also have just bought a bought with an ABI bronze windlass however the previous owner was using the incorrect chain and after many years the teeth are worn down and of course the chain slips.
I am interested in buying a 3/8" gypsy for replacement or failing that perhaps brazing and rebuilding what i have.
Bottom line, you interested in selling your 3/8" gypsy?

Re: ABI Windlass Gypsy

Hello. Did you find a 3/8 gypsy? I just bought a used ABI bronze windlass that I need to convert to 5/16. I would love to sell the 3/8. Thanks.

Re: ABI Windlass Gypsy

You may not have to switch gypsies. We've been using 5/16 NACM chain in an ABI windlass with a 3/8 gypsy for over 20 years without any problem.

Trouble with my gypsy is that the previous owner used undersized chain link length which caused wearing off of all sprocket teeth on the back side of the sprockets.
Now no chain will wind in. I need to rebuild or to replace.
Thanks for your info.
