Re: Anchor chain

I've not heard of that de-bunking yet. Where have you read about a heavy anchor over heavy chain?

Re: Anchor chain

We sail the Med and carry 100 meter of 10mm chain for a 9 ton 38 ft sailing vessel.

We have a 40ft cruiser with 60m of G70 8mm spliced to a further 45m of 16mm Octoplait so 105m total or just over 330ft in American money. This is attached to our 33kg Vulcan. the 60m of chain gives us the capability to anchor in 13.5m of water (15m with the bow roller) at 4:1 on chain and up to 20m at 5:1 on both. Or of course set more scope in shallower water if we expect a serious blow or if we are tying up stern to shore.

If you are going anywhere with rock or coral then you want more chain.

If you are thinking of having 50m (or 2x25m) then my gut says buy a single complete length rather than link 2 sets of chain as the link will be a weak point and you want to avoid those as much as possible.

Hope that helps

Re: Anchor chain

We carry 185 feet of chain on our boat. The beauty of being able to anchor with all chain most of the time is that you can use an electric windless to retrieve it. On our last cruise to the Bahamas, we never had to let out more rode than that.

Re: Anchor chain

Thank you everyone. This has been very helpful as a rough guide. I reckon, at the moment, that 2 x25m may get me by but double would be better.
Thank you.

Re: Anchor chain

Buying new chain within the week. We have a 34' mono, sail in the Caribbean and have an electric windlass. Looking at 250' of chain. Those of you in the Caribbean, what do you carry?
Thanks
