Anchor chain protection

Is spraying WD-40 on the anchor chain to prevent rusting and corrosion a good idea or a bad idea?

Re: Anchor chain protection

Back in the day, didn’t ships dump used engine oil into the chain locker? I can’t believe that WD-40 would be that much better for the environment. The sacrificial galvanizing is what should keep you chain satisfactory until it is time to replace or regalvanize.

Re: Anchor chain protection

It won't do much. It doesn't stay on long. It will help a little. Neither good nor bad I'd say. Is your chain already rusty? If so, short of re-galvanizing, all you can do is use a rust converter like Corroseal and paint it.

Re: Anchor chain protection

I can't imagine lubricating anchor chain. Environmental disaster. Just buy a new chain every 20 years.
