Anchor chain windlass options
Will 5/16 G4 chain work with a 3/8 gypsy?

I have an old Maxwell 1200 windlass that failed two day ago. One of the gears stripped. I have access to a new Maxwell RC 10-10 but the gypsy is for 3/8” chain. I have 400’ of 5/16 G4 chain. Will that gypsy work to retrieve the smaller chain or am I asking for a bunch of headache.
