We have a 44# steel Spade (Passport 37) and we've anchored from Annapolis to Florida, throughout the Western Caribbean - Yucatan, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama... all the way to Cartagena Colombia and then back to SW Florida.

Our "storm" anchor is a way oversized Fortress FX-37 that we handset from the dinghy since we only have one anchor roller.... for the Spade.

The new anchors may be great, but we wouldn't trade our Spade!

Oops! forgot the to say something,

Yup, that's why I'm in the "other". My primary's a Spade and I wouldn't trade it either. Ken

Re: Anchor Poll

Bruce. The next one will be Spade/Manson type but it takes some modifications of our bowsprit that is not compatible with Manson/Rocna roll bar. Spade will fit but not available locally.

Re: Anchor Poll

Max16/44-lb pivoting SuperMax is primary.

Fortress FX-37 primary spare, dismantled and in a bag but relatvely quickly deployable on it's own rope/chain rode.

Delta (35?) on board, too...

Re: Anchor Poll

Primary: 10kg (22#) NZ-made Rocna
Storm: 15kg (33#) Spade
Kedge: Fortress FX23

I gave away the plough that was the previous storm anchor (couldn't take money for it). The Britany that was the bower anchor is now in my basement.

Yeah, I quess the Northhill is the epitome of "old school"! I used to have a big Northhill on my bow about thirty years ago. I loved that anchor for it's holding capabilities in a variety of substrates, but I always had to set a wind-up alarm clock (also old school) so I could wake up to unfoul and reset at the tide change. Keep that Northhill,- I think they will soon be as rare as slide rules!

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

That's how I ended up with a spade, apature through sprit would not allow roll bar types or many others. Cabo Rico's, I believe, can have similar issues.

Am replacing bow sprit this winter with ss due to weird corrosion problem on old one. I will move anchor rollers so I can use roll bar type, and so wings on spade don't foul bob stay wire, and two anchors don't bang. Made a cad drawing, next to order steel.

Now that we have all this nice data some bored soul could make a db or spreadsheet out of it, anchor weight vs displacement, etc.

Re: Anchor Poll

Interesting results. It does not reflect what is seen on the bows of boats in marinas. Perhaps these boats don't anchor much?
