Re: Anchor Poll

I just had a walk around O,P,Q arms at Horizon Shores Marina. What was surprising was the majority being CQR's.

CQR = 49
Delta = 6
rocna = 2
manson = 3
sarca super = 1
sarca exel = 2
Bruce = 6
WTF? = 1
NO anchor = 1
total...............71

We have had very good results with our 50 pound HydroBubble on an all chain rode.

Cruisers out there doing it are not found in marinas, so the sample is skewed.

Re: Anchor Poll

Most of the boats in my marina go out and return without ever dropping the hook. The fellow in the slip next to me went to Hawaii and back without ever using his anchor. The good news is that his CQR never drags.

Re: Anchor Poll

We have a 40 kg Jambo anchor. We anchor frequently and we are happy with it.

If somebody were looking for the anchor on my boat, he would think there isn't any, for the bow anchor is stowed in the chain/anchor locker and the storm anchor is in a cockpit locker.

Re: Anchor Poll

CQRs are the dominant anchor in my area of the marina holding about 80 boats between 30 and 65 feet, mixed power and sail. Some even sport two on the bow or a CQR/claw combination. The only roll-bar anchor is a Bugel.

That certainly looks well used.

I think Bugel only made in SS, so that is a copy.
They are reasonably popular and cheap around here. The Bugel is a very simple construction so its easy to fabricate.
Some of the copies look good and for price would be a reasonable choice for the cruiser on a very strict budget. However there are some very bad copies, with geometry that looks nothing like the original.

Can someone confirm this? I thought they made galvanized anchors as well.

Thanks for the link. I hunted them down based on this thread and found only SS. I sent an E-Mail and asked about galvanized and was told they only would do SS. I suggested that in my business we called that "leaving money on the table". Go figure. I wound up with a Rocna because of their reply

Sounds like they had no galvanized in stock and only had the much more costly SS on hand. (Why have an SS anchor?)

Actually, they said they did not make anything but SS because of the mechanichal properties - bla bal bla. I say bla because I am a registered Mechanichal Engineer and do custom machine design as a specialty. 316L ss is far from the strongest material one might consider for an anchor. It is only superior in the shine it will take and hold and the boat-bucks it can extract from a transfixed boat owner. I smelled smoke and pulled the fire alarm. He blew me off.

Cuz they look cool when people walk past the boat at the dock. One guy on our dock has a SS anchor he always wrapped in a towel. He never let the thing touch dew let alone put to use in the ocean.
