Maybe all chain is the go but trying to minimise weight.
I doubt it. What you probably have is a separate capstan on top of the gypsy which is intended for warping. This capstan is not intended for your rope anchor rode; it is for dock lines. Your gypsy will most likely handle a rope rode as well as chain, unless it is some old-fashioned type I have never heard of. The splice should go right through it and you shouldn't need to transfer anything.

Well, the whole Maxwell VWC series for one do not support rope rode on the chain wheel. A rope tail you need to haul in using the capstan until a wrap of chain is on it, then engage the chain stopper (you better have one) so that you can transfer the chain to the gypsy again. A real PITA and thus all chain is much preferred.

ciao!
Nick.

It's a lofrans tigeress windlass.
I think all chain may be the go.
Too much of a pain when the weather is bad or strong winds/ tides.

Re: Anchor Rode

Has anyone tried using wire rope? I have read that the fishermen use this -- 7x19 galvanized, probably, instead of chain, and wind it up on a reel.

I have seen a dredge moored this way - two a side.
